Cultural relativism explains that no certain person has any right to judge another society’s beliefs. If this concept is thought of broadly, then this could be considered one moral code among many throughout our huge world. In order to expand on this idea, there are five claims, which are helpful in understanding cultural relativism. In today’s many and different societies each one has their own moral code. This code then determines what is right or acceptable within that society. There is no objective standard that can be used to judge one society’s code is better or worse than another’s. This idea therefore means there is no “universal truth” in ethics or beliefs. We must in turn with these ideas that even our society has no special status, even though we may feel inclined to think that we are right in different situations. Finally, it is simply arrogance to judge the conduct of another culture’s practices.

I feel that these claims are all correct and accurate. However, it is definitely possible that these ideas could have affected American’s point of view towards poverty in other countries. Cultural relativism, although this is not its purpose, could make someone more apathetic to having any opinion on a global situation. If a country has a weak economy, and if that country also is struggling with other issues such as murder or thievery, a cultural relativist may not have any feelings toward the problem. One could simply just avoid the situation by saying, “Well, that is simply the way the society works, and we should not judge or intervene in their problems.” While, I do believe it is not right to judge another society’s beliefs, I do suppose that I think there are times we must take action in a different country’s culture.

Immigration is someone entering a new country so that they may take up residence in this new setting and environment. Legal immigration has been a process in our country for years, and this practice has helped the United States in many ways. We now are a highly populated and diverse nation with different types of people.

However, illegal immigration is an intensely debated issue in the United States. I personally just find myself at a loss when trying to decide my stance on this topic. I am able to see all sides to this difficult and complicated issue. In Eduardo Mosies Penlaver’s article Are Illegal Immigrants Pioneers, he takes an understanding view on illegal immigration. He respectfully argues that today’s immigrants are no different from our country’s pioneers of the past. Both groups of people were and are fleeing their country in order to try and make better lives for themselves. He also encourages people to take a Christian standpoint so that we may overlook many negatives and simply accept these illegal immigrants into our country.

In Steven Camarota’s article Too Many, he argues the illegal immigrants are greatly harming the United States. He claims that illegal immigration has caused overpopulation, as well as hurt our economy and education system in our country. The United States has become more divided due to the fact that illegal immigrants are not even trying to assimilate to our culture, and this affects public schools. Also the classic argument against illegal immigration is that they are taking jobs that should be given to Americans, and this hurts our economy as well.

I know there are many disadvantages to illegal immigration that cause many problems in the United States. However, I cannot help but feel empathetic to their difficult situation. Illegal immigrants take the risk of coming to our country in hopes of making better lives for themselves and their families. I feel sympathy for them, despite all the reasons why I shouldn’t.

ICTs are useful tools that have affected so many people in multiple ways, and they provide several benefits. They obviously serve as communication devices and prove as a means of research to gain information. For example, cell phones and emails help families and friends stay connected to when they are physically thousands of miles away from each other. In addition to improving communication, ICTs also provide an easy approach to researching and acquiring information. The Internet gives quick and easy access to any study, and computers also process data more effectively than a person computing the figures. These advantages have improved businesses, families, students, and any individual.

Although there are such key benefits to ICTs, they also have their disadvantages. Impoverished countries do not have the same easy access to these tools as Americans do. They simply do not have the financial access that I know that I sometimes take for granted. The digital divide has occurred between different groups of people. For example, as new technologies develop, the poor countries remain struggling to keep up with the higher standards. They have less physical access to devices such as cell phones and computers, and this lack of access points widens the gap. The digital divide also does not just exist between the United States and third world countries. The divide is also present between the older and younger generations of our society. Adults tend to have lesser knowledge in computers and cell phones simply because their generation did not grow up with such tools as the teenage population has today. As teenagers’ familiarity with new technologies grow, the older age groups have difficulties in keeping or catching up with the advances.

ICTs have made a huge impact on the entire world in different ways. They do provide easier communication and research availability, but they also unfortunately have created the digital divide. However, everyone should have the chance and opportunity to use these innovative tools in technology.

I can’t believe I am already half way through my first semester at Florida Southern College. Time always seems to go by faster than it should, but I have truly enjoyed my overall college experience so far.

Although I love college, I have run into some challenges. At first my classes were very easy, and I was excited because I thought, “Oh, maybe college isn’t so hard after all.” I was obviously mistaken because now all of courses have picked up the pace with constant assignments, several group projects, and many difficult papers. I’m already adjusting to this problem by using better time management skills.

All of the homework is stressful, but despite all of the work, I really love my major. I am in broadcast journalism, and I am involved with Wellness TV and the Sports Network. My favorite class is Media Writing, and this course made me decide to join the Southern Newspaper Staff. My involvement in the different activities on campus has definitely kept me busy.

I am most surprised by how easily I’ve adjusted to this new environment. I am from Pennsylvania, and I was so excited to come to college in Florida, but I was also slightly nervous about the distance. However, I have not really been homesick yet, and I have met so many amazing people that I know will cheer me up if I ever do miss my home.

I don’t think I would change anything about my college experience thus far. I have learned more about myself in the past eight weeks than I have in a long time. I went back home to Pennsylvania for fall break, and it really did feel good to be home. As I took off from Pittsburgh to come back to school, though, I realized something very important. I needed to go home, not because I was homesick, but because it reaffirmed how much I love it down here, and how I know for sure that this is where I belong.

SAGA planned a movie event in the thrift alumni room, and we watched the award winning movie, Slumdog Millionaire. This was an excellent choice of a movie to express the issue of poverty. The main character, Jamal Malik, and the rest of his family struggles with poverty. However, a turn of fate gives him the opportunity to become a contestant on India’s version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?.

He is one question away from winning all the money, but instead the police arrest him because they accuse him of cheating. They use the reasoning of “how could a slumdog possibly know the answers to these questions?”

When the police are questioning Jamal, he explains his life story, and just how exactly he knows all of the answers to the questions on the show. He begins his story from when he was a young child and he was orphaned, to his love for his friend Latika, and to how he and his brother’s relationship fell apart.

Each chapter of his life justifies how he knows the answers to all the questions on the show, and Jamal does prove his innocence to Mumbai and all of India. I absolutely love this movie because it has twists and turns, and crazy connections, and I like it’s theme of fate. However, this movie is also very revolutionary because it opened my eyes to poverty as well.

The movie portrays his background in poverty growing up. As an orphan, he had no money, and he struggled financially for most of his life. The movie also shows life in the slums, and the state that some people must live in. Again, SAGA selected a great movie to watch because it made me more aware of poverty in areas around the world.

The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie, was performed at Florida Southern College. The murder mystery tells the story of a young couple who open a bed and breakfast, but when snow confines everyone to the hotel, a “Sergeant” comes to the house to ask questions about a recent murder in London. One of guests is murdered during the snowstorm, and the infamous question of “who done it?” arises.

Jim Beck designed the set of the play. I was probably most impressed by the set of the show. I remembered seeing the empty stage during the first of week of school, and it was extraordinary to see the transformation of the stage, and then to see the performance with the set in use. I thought the staircase and the use of the hallways were helpful in making the play more realistic. It really seemed as though someone would be going upstairs to another room, the actors walking out of the living room area down the sloped hallways made a cool effect. I also liked how Mollie would always be tidying the set at the beginning of the play. She utilized all of the furniture, by straightening the pillows on the couch, or just by simply moving an end table to also make it look straighter. I also thought the white background when the window opened was pretty neat. It truly looked like snow!

Stacy Fulford designed the costumes for The Mousetrap. The costumes were very fitting of the characters, no pun intended. For example, Miss Casewell’s outfit suited her perfectly because she wore a very proper and austere outfit of a shirt and tie with a coat. These clothes matched her serious personality. Mr. Paravinci’s black suit matched his very mysterious manners. Miss Boyle’s dress suit and fur fit her personality as well, because of the snobby air about her. All of the costumes were very appropriate for the characters.

Seth Watson directed the lighting design. Lighting in the show played a key roll in the performance. I liked the ambiance of the stage when the lights in the living room area were turned off, and when just the overhead lights shone. It created a very mysterious and suspenseful mood. For example, when Sergeant Trotter had everyone retrace their steps close to the end of the play, he turned off the lights. This created a sense of anticipation in the audience.

Jaclyn Ledoux also did well with sound design. My favorite sound in the show was when you hear Mollie playing the tune of “three blind mice” on the piano. This haunting melody sounded so eerie in the theater, and the sound was done perfectly. I also thought the sound of the old fashioned radio was very realistic. I also enjoyed the part before the murderer kills Mrs. Boyle, because she was listening the scary story on the radio and then the operatic music. The radio added the time era of the play as well.

The actors definitely did well with the show. My favorite character from the play was Christopher Wren. I found him hilarious from the beginning of the play. Brendan played the eccentric role of Wren perfectly. From the way he carried himself to his tone of voice, Brendan was excellent at portraying the somewhat psychotic man. I also thought Casey Moulton did very well as the Sergeant. As a freshman, Casey showed so much potential, and I’m sure he’ll be in more plays on this campus. He fooled everyone into thinking he was the strict Sergeant, but then at the end of the play he did a good job of changing his character’s attitude from authoritative to crazy.

Paul Bawek, the director of the show, should be very proud of the performance. I think he was very successful in putting together an entertaining play. I’m sure he helped all of the actor’s achieve their current level of acting ability, but I’m also positive that he helped with everything from the set and light design to the sound and costume design as well.

I was very pleased with The Mousetrap, The show not only kept my attention, but it actually kept me engaged also. The ending of the Sergeant being one of the missing children and the murderer really took me by surprise. The play proved entertaining from the costumes to the actors’ acting skills and even to the sound design. All of these components helped make this show successful and enjoyable.

Throughout my weeks here at Florida Southern College, I realize now that I try to devote my days to going to class and doing homework, staying involved in extracurricular activities, making friends and hanging out with them, and then also I’m trying to stay healthy which is a time commitment too.

I usually stay busy from the time I wake up in the morning and until I go to sleep at night. For example, on Wednesday September 23, 2009, after all of my classes, I did have some spare time to relax at the pool, but then I had to attain communication hours for my News Media Practicum class so I was at the communication department for about 3 hours. I also always try to make time to hang out with my friends. On Thursday September 24, 2009, I had a very busy day from waking up early for an Astronomy exam to finally finishing up with classes and meetings at 6 in the evening. After such a busy day, I knew I was tired, but I still made time to hang out with friends at Beyond, and then I also watched a movie with a different group of friends. Finally, I always make time to exercise as well, so between hanging out with friends I went for a quick run around the lake. My days are always busy, but I work around my schedule to fit in my top priorities.

Tom Norman’s presentation made me realize that I do know what my priorities are, and he also helped me better understand time management. After his talk with our class, I think that I may try and fit too many things in one day. I think I should devote more time to studying one day, and then the next more time to exercising, and then the next more time to friends. Time management is a concept that I’m still striving to become better at, but Tom Norman definitely helped me in seeing the importance of prioritizing my time.

In today’s society, information and communication technologies are available for most American teenagers to use. We have countless ways to communicate with one and another, and we have more access to information than other generations have in the past. ICTs have played a huge role in my life because it has made communicating easier, and they also serve as a fast tool for gaining information.

Facebook is an example of an ICT that a majority of college students have and use. This social networking website is also growing and expanding, and now even teachers, parents, and elementary students have them. Features on Facebook include, “chat”, which is basically like AOL’s Instant Messenger. This tool allows one to talk with countless people, whether they are old friends, parents, teachers, or a person you’ve never truly met before. On Facebook one may also upload photos, update a status to tell everyone how you are or what you’re doing, and you can also write on people’s walls and leave a comment.

Besides Facebook, I also email constantly as another way that I use ICTs. Email is an absolutely huge and global communication tool. Personally, I use emails as a more professional way to get in touch with a teacher or someone in a business position. In emails, you are able to plan exactly what you want to say and you can easily ask specific questions.

Different ways to use information and communication technology surrounds us everywhere. However, I think I use my cell phone the most out of all them. My phone provides a way for me to call and talk to 60 different contacts. My phone also combines ICTs together. For example, I am able to get on the Internet from my phone, and therefore I am able to send emails from my phone. In the palm of my hand I have access to Facebook, email, and a telephone all at once. Technology appears to have no boundaries!

The digital divide is a serious issue in today’s technologically advanced society. However, I am optimistic about the challenging situation. I believe that the governments of wealthy and third world countries may meet in order to decrease prejudices and the cost of business. Also, due to growing countries’ comparative ICT level, they will hopefully be able to develop rapidly in order to quickly close the gap in the digital divide. One must be optimistic when dealing with a crisis such as this because being pessimistic will not solve any problem.

Although I am optimistic about the entire digital divide predicament, it is also important to be a structuralist at the same time because they’re results are usually the most effective. They believe that ICTs will not completely change or alter a society, but rather the society will revolutionize ICTs. Structuralists are realistic about the difficult of giving everyone in a society equal access to information, but they rationally find a solution to close the digital gap.

Whether conformities or disagreement arises within the general public rests on a number of various factors, such as, counting the society’s structural environment, its laws and rules, the vitality of its private regions, the technologies already available, and other different aspects. Conflicts or union depends on how all of the features relate.

Along with being optimistic, I believe universal access to information is possible. Gaining universal access will not be easy by any means, however, after overcoming obstacle by obstacle to close the digital divide will make universal access much more tangible.

After completing the MyPlan Career Value Assessment and Career Interest Inventory tests, my passion for pursuing a job in broadcast journalism has further grown. The Personal Interest Area result of the test showed my primary interest area as artistic and my secondary interest area as investigative. In journalism, I feel that these two traits go hand in hand. One should have a creative, original, independent, curious, analytical, insightful, and open-minded nature in order to exist in career within the media.

The results to the tests somewhat surprised me because I wasn’t positive if the evaluation would suggest my exact aspirations. I’ve taken several occupational tests like this one throughout my prior high school experience, but they never seemed to give an accurate score of my personality or show a result of my future goals. However, the MyPlan test described my behavior, and the composite score to my Career Interest Inventory test revealed an occupation as a broadcast news analyst.

Sonia Nazario’s book, Enrique’s Journey, is a perfect example of how journalism can affect certain issues such as poverty, world hunger, and illegal immigration. I find Sonia an inspiration because she is an active journalist attempting to improve the destitute and starving areas of the world. She enlightened Florida Southern College and many other schools everywhere to the problems with immigration. With the new information she provides, countless students will be able to take a stand on this growing issue.
